What are the symptons of asbestos diseases like mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma Questions Answered
Most inhaled asbestos fibers stick to mucus in the nose, throat, windpipe, or large tubes of the lungs (bronchi) and are then coughed up or swallowed.

Longer and or thinner fibers are less likely to be 'caught' in this natural defense and may reach the ends of the small airways and then go through into the lungs pleural lining and chest wall.

Fibers can then damage the mesothelial cells of the pleura and eventually cause mesothelioma.

Lung cell damage by asbestos fibers can also result in asbestosis (scar tissue of the lung) and/or lung cancer.

Peritoneal mesothelioma, which forms in the abdomen, may result from coughing up and swallowing inhaled asbestos fibers.

Cancers of the larynx, pancreas, esophagus, colon, and kidney have also been linked to asbestos exposure, but the increased risk is not as great as with lung cancer.

Persistent
The most common mesothelioma symptom is persistent pain in the chest - sometimes accompanied by severe difficulty breathing. Coughing, weight loss and fever are not uncommon.

From the beginning of symptoms the median survival is about 17 months.
